Georgievich JAWLENSKY (1864 - 1905)
Jawlensky was born into an aristocratic family
1864 in Torzhok province, Russia. When he was 10
his parents moved to Moscow. Family tradition
dictated that he was destined for a military
career. However, while he was a Cadet he visits
the Moscow World Exposition. This had a profound
affect upon him and much of his leisure time was
spent at the Tret'yakov State Gallery. From
1889-96 he was a student at the Academy of Art.
Jawlensky is known for his important
contribution to Expressionist painting using a
combination of color and form. He was an
acquaintance of Wassily Kandinsky, another
Russian artist. In 1905 Jawlensky exhibited 6
works at the Salone d'Automne.
Ill health plagued Jawlensky towards the end of
his life and large medical bills took a toll on
his financial situation. He suffered from
arthritis and eventually had to abandon painting
altogether. He died in 1941 in Weisbaden at the
age of 77 years..
