Edvard Munch (1886 - 1944)
Norwegian born artist is regarded as a pioneer
of the Expressionist Movement. Edvard's mother
died of tuberculosis when he was 5 years old and
his sister also died of the same illness at the
age of 15. Munch himself suffered illness
throughout his life. Of his 5 siblings, only one
ever married, dying a few months after the
wedding. It is not surprising therefore that
Munch's work often reflect the grief and death
and illness.
The Scream is often described as the first
expressionist picture and is an extreme example
of Munch's soul paintings. 1n 1907 Munch settled
in Berlin and the following year he suffered a
complete nervous breakdown. In 1927 he exhibited
over 223 works retrospective exhibitions at the
National Galleries in Berlin and Oslo.
In 1933 a broken blood vessel in his right eye
caused almost total blindness. Munch died in
1944 shortly after his 80th birthday. A prolific
artist, Munch left 1,000 paintings, 15,400
prints, 4,500 drawings and watercolors as well
as sculptures, to the City of Oslo.
