Edward Hopper
Born in Nyak, New York State in 1882. By the age
of 17 he had already decided to become an artist
and on leaving school he studied commercial
illustration. In 1900 he attended the New York
School of Art where William Merritt Chase and
John Singer Sargent were tutors. However, he
described Robert Henri as his 'most influential
teacher'.
Between 1906 and 1910 Hopper made long visits to
Europe and painted most outdoor city scenes.
After 1910 he never traveled abroad again and it
was his scenes of American life upon which his
reputation was founded.
In 1924 he married Josephine Nivison, also an
artist who studied under Chase and Henri. Hopper
was a difficult man and their turbulent marriage
often resulted in physical violence. Nivison is
the model for many of his works..
