Born in 1890 in Austria. He was an art student
in Vienna and it was there he met Gustav Klimt .
They both exhibited at the Vienna Kunstachau
1909 along with Edvard Munch and Vincent van
Gogh.
By 1910 Schiele had developed his personal style
and was a number of portrait commissions. In
1911 he left Vienna for the peace and solitude
of the country. He married Edith Harms in 1915
and the same year was drafted into the Austrian
army. Throughout his military career he painted
prolifically and his solo exhibition at the
Vienna Secession in 1918 brought him critical
acclaim.
Schiele died at the age of 28 after suffering
influenza; his wife having died just three days
earlier.
