Born in Mexico City in
1907. At the age of 7 Kahlo suffered polio which
affected her legs. At the age of 18 she was
involved in a serious bus accident which caused
multiple injuries and left her permanently
disabled. Kahlo's recovery was miraculous
although she experienced severe pain all her
life and had to have many operations.
Her turbulent marriage to Diego Rivera and the
pain and suffering she endured are catalogued in
her art. She attempted suicide several times and
after the amputations of her right leg below the
knee, she became deeply depressed.
Kahlo was greatly admired for her stunning
beauty and both she and Rivera were fantastic
story tellers. She appeared on the cover of
French Vogue and was entertained by Picasso.
Frida Kahlo died on 13th July 1954 at the age of
47. The cause of death is not known and the last
words in her diary read "I hope the leaving is
joyful and I hope never to return".
