Born in 1887 just outside of Sun Prairie,
Wisconsin. From an early age Georgia knew that
she was destined to be an artist. When her
family moved to Virginia in 1903 she took
private art lessons and upon graduation from
High School, she attended the Art Institute of
Chicago.
O'Keeffe later studied at the Art Student League
in New York but became dissatisfied with her
work and when classes resumed in 1908, she
decided not to return. She took teaching posts
in Texas which allowed her free time to devote
to her painting. In 1915 O'Keeffe sent one of
her drawings to a long time friend, who passed
them onto Alfred Stieglitz, a very influential
figure in the modern art movement. This action
was to have a profound affect on Georgia'
O'Keeffe's life.
Stieglitz displayed 10 of her drawings at his
291 Gallery. Within 2 years he had persuaded
O'Keeffe to move to New York and spend all her
time painting. Her work evoked much interest and
although Steiglitz was married at the time, he
later divorced and they married. For the next 20
years they lived and worked together, forming
one of the most exciting collaborations of the
time.
Georgia O'Keeffe created dynamic canvases with
explosions of colorful flowers, along with
landscapes and cityscapes. She died in Sante Fe,
New Mexico in 1985 at the age of 98..
