Born to the son of a gold
and silver engraver in a suburb of Vienna in
1862. After formal training at the Vienna School
of Decorative Arts, Klimt opened his own Studio
with his brother Ernst. From the start they were
quite successful, receiving commissions from
theaters and museums.
In 1897 Klimt formed the Vienna Secession. By
this time he had developed his own distinctive
art nouveau style which became the trademark of
the movement.
Gustav Klimt's best known painting, The Kiss,
was first exhibited in 1908. At the time it was
highly controversial although admired at the
same time.
In addition to his traditional work on canvas,
Klimt saw himself more as a muralist and
decorative artist. He also worked in other
media, such as glass and ceramics.
Klimt died on Janaury 11th 1918 at the age of 56
after suffering a stroke and pneumonia.
