Henri Toulouse-Lautrec 1864 - 1901
Born in Albi in France in 1864. An aristocrat
and the son and heir of Comte Alphonse-Charles
de Toulouse. Henri was a sickly child and at the
age of 12 he broke his left leg, and then two
years later the right leg. The bones did not
heal properly and his growth was stunted. In
adult life at full height, Henri
Toulouse-Lautrec was just 4'5" tall.
Lautrec lived for his art. He resided in
Montmarte in Paris which was the centre of
French bohemian life. His paintings are of
Parisian nightlife and feature actresses,
dancers, circus performers and prostitutes.
Lautrec was very much a part of the scenes he
loved to paint.
His painting, At the Moulin de Galette (1892) is
at the Art Institute in Chicago and the
lithograph Seated Female Clown (1896) can be
found at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
Toulouse-Lautrec was a severe alcoholic and
suffered a complete mental and physical collapse
at the age of 37.
He died on September 9th 1901 at the family
