Born in Brooklyn in 1960
to middle class Haitian and Puerto Rican
parents. As a teenager he left home and went to
live in Lower Manhattan, taking drugs and
playing in a band, supporting himself with odd
jobs.
During the late 70's graffiti started to appear
on the streets of Manhattan, all signed SAMO.
They soon attracted the attention of the art
world and around 1980 his art began to attract
attention, after a group of punk and graffiti
artists held the Times Square Show.
Basquiat was the ultimate party animal with an
enormous appetite for drugs and the good life.
He would often paint 18 hours consecutively,
fueled by cocaine and marijuana.
Basquiat collaborated with Andy Warhol and
Francesco Clemente.
He died of a heroin overdose in 1988 aged 28
years.
