Joan Miro (1893 - 1983)
Joan Miro, Spanish artist born in 1893 in
Barcelona. He studied art in Barcelona and held
his first exhibition there in 1918.
His early works reflect the brilliant colors
used by the Fauve artists. However, after 1920
and his first trip to Paris his works were of a
Surrealist nature and he exhibited with a group
of Surrealist artists in 1921. He lived in Paris
where he met Pablo Picasso.
By 1930 he has developed his own very
distinctive style. During this time his work
gained international recognition. He returned to
live in Spain during the mid 1940's and during
this time worked in other media, including
sculpture, ceramics and murals.
He visited the United States for the first time
in 1947 and MOMA held a retrospective of his
works in 1951 and in 1959.
His house in Palma de Majorca was designed by
the architect Lluis Sert and in 1992 it was
transformed into the Miro Museum and opened to
the public.
