L-S-Lowry 1887-1976.
Laurence Stephen Lowry, born in a leafy suburb
of Manchester, England and initially worked as
an office clerk. He attended art lessons in the
evenings but was described by his teachers as a
solitary and unsociable.
By 1915 his "matchstick men' style had
developed. The family's financial circumstances
took a downturn and the family had to move to a
poorer area. In 1932 his father died leaving
debts and his mother was bedridden. Lowry worked
during the day, caring for his mother and
painting in the evenings. His isolation
increased and he became withdrawn. His mother
died in 1939 but unfortunately her death
preceded his recognition as an artist.
Lowry did not marry and had no children.
