Rene Magritte (1898-1967)
Born in Belgium, Magritte started taking art
classes when he was just 12 years old. His
mother committed suicide when he was 14 years
old and his father was a tailor and unsuccessful
merchant. In 1922 Magritte married Georgette
Berger.
Magritte studied at the Academie des Beaux-Arts
in Brussels. Inspired by the work of Giorgio
Chirico, his paintings are associated with the
Surrealist movement. His meeting with Chirico
was an artistic turning point for Magritte and
he became close to the Dadaist artists and
co-operated with Francis Picabia and Man Ray on
the magazines Aesophage and Marie.
Magritte's first solo exhibition was held in
Brussels during 1927. His work is meticulous and
skilled and is noted for works which contain
ordinary objects in an extraordinary context.
Magritte died of cancer in Brussels, at the age
of 69.
