Tamara de Lempicka (1898-1980)
"I live life in the margins of society, and the
rules of normal society don't apply to those who
live on the fringe."
Born Tamara Gorska in 1898 Warsaw and hailed as
the foremost Art Deco portraitist of her time,
she is often credited with inventing the art
deco style of painting. Her entire life was a
string of dramatic events and scandalous
affairs, with both men and women.
She married wealthy attorney, Tadeusz Lempicki
in 1916 and in 1918 gave birth to their only
child, Kizette. The same year they emigrated to
Paris and Tamara took paintings lessons from
Andre Lhote. In 1926 she displayed her work at
the first Art Deco exhibition in Paris.
After a string of affairs, Tamara de Lempicka
and Tadesuz divorced and she married Baron Raul
Kuffner in 1933. In 1939 they moved to the USA
and her work was shown at several Galleries,
including Paul Reinhart and Julian Levy's.
In 1960 her style changed to abstract form and
the use of a spatula. Her work declined in
out-put in later years and after Raoul died in
1962, she created very little.
Tamara de Lemicka died in her sleep in Mexico.
