Wassily Kandinsky (1866 -
1944)
Born in Russia, Dec 1866, in Moscow. His father
was a tea merchant and when he was 5 the family
moved to Odessa. Wassily Kandinsky and Franz
Marc were founder members of the Blaue Reiter
group of artists, along with Paul Klee and
August Macke. Kandinsky is an important
innovator of modern art and played a pivotal
role in the development of abstract
expressionist painting and he was an influential
artist of his time.
Kandinsky studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in
Munich and his early paintings were of a
naturalistic style. In 1902, Kandinsky exhibited
for the first time with the Berlin Secession and
produced his first woodcuts.
After a trip to Paris he was impressed by the
works of the Fauves and Impressionist artists
and his painting become more colored. In 1904
and 1905 he was awarded medals in Paris and was
elected a member of the jury of the Salon d'
Automne. Around 1913 his first abstract works
were completed.
In 1921 and became one of the principal teachers
at the Bauhaus school in Weimar, Germany,
remaining with the school until it was closed by
the Nazi regime in 1933.
Kandinsky was also a graphic artist and writer.
Kandinksy died in Paris in 1944.
