Lawrence
Alma-Tadema Born at Dronyp, Netherlands in 1836
and died 1912. Renowned for his depictions of
Classical antiquity. His work was in demand
during the Victorian period. Tragically his
first wife and their only son died of smallpox,
leaving him to care for their two daughters. In
1871 he married his 17 year old pupil, Laura
Epps and become a naturalized British citizen.
Alma-Tadema received many awards and honours
from around the world including a knighthood
from Britain in 1899 followed by the prestigious
Order of Merit in 1905.
His clients included members of the British
Royal family and the Russian Imperial Family -
he a noted Society portraitist.
